TIP: Force quit
If you have problems with apps. on Linux, instead of going to the command line to kill a frozen app. try this. Right click you gnome panel and select Add To Panel->Actions->Force Quit. A little icon will appear on the panel, now when you have a frozen application click that icon and then the frozen application window. You will be asked if you want to force quit, say yes and it should be killed and disappear.
