Download NLD10

The Moose receives a lot of questions about availability of the software. We don't have it, Novell did not yet release any public beta.

BUT......

if you would like to play with XGL, Beagle, Tomboy, F-Spot, Banshee, the new Tango style desktop download and try SUSE Linux 10.1 beta. (check release schedule)

Howto XGL on SUSE Linux 10.0 and SUSE Linux 10.1

Remember:

1.) SUSE Linux 10.1 is beta

2.) The difference between NLD10 and SUSE Linux 10.1.
"Tested, supported stable corporate desktop vs a unsupported community product."
Read this article from Joe Harman. It's about NLD9 vs SUSE 9.3 but is still valid for NLD10 vs SUSE Linux 10.x.
SUSE Linux = for your home machine and test machine (not supported)
NLD = the business desktop for your users (supported and certified with hard and software)

Release and availability
The expectation is that NLD10 and SLES10 are released at the same day. With the help from our friends at Google we found the magic date.....may 2006 is the expected release.

I hope NLD10 is nothing like suse 10.1. I downloaded and tried 10.1beta3 a couple of days ago and I was pretty disappointed. I have been an ubuntu user for almost a year, but decided tu give it a try. What I liked : the tango icon theme, it doesn´t have the blue colored folders that I hate so much, also the new theme is so much better than the old industrial. Mono apps (f-spot, beagle, banshee..) are really cool, especially the beagle/nautilus integration.
What I didnt like : hated having to download and burn 5 cds, it´s just too much. I´m a gnome user so i don´t like having to install all these kde apps. The menus are horrible and cluttered, hope they switch to the "computer" menu they showed on the NLD10 previews. The booting process was slower than in ubuntu dapper, probably because of gnome 2.13 speed improvements. I hate YaST, it doesnt match with the rest of the desktop, and its slowwww. I tried to install XGL, downloaded the rpms. Dependency-hell.
Wow i just realised i dont have any more space to write so, keep up the good work on this blog!
