After an overwhelming number of requests, below a link to a Linux fonts howto that explains the matter in a concise manner. Be advised that this requires a bit more tweaking than usual and may vary from display to display, in other words: one size does not fit all.
Overall I am quite pleased with the results in my particular case. If you're OK with your Linux font setup it is probably not worth spending much time on this.
